Commonwealth Games

Yes they suck!

But the track cycling was good. Especially the keirin event.

Why do we Australians place so much emphasis on sport? Think about it. It doesnt make sense.
We have spent all this money on the games, when in a few years time. Melbourne will be broke. Take Sydney for example the infrastructure is shot, because of the expense of the Olympic Games. While the short term economic benefit a large sporting event brings in the longer term, the actual event costs a lot more money. There is other factors at stake but you cannot deny the Games phenoma expense.
Paying for the athlete's training comes straight out of back pocket. We don't even like paying for education, but we pay for athletes? What do athletes give us? Some success at some event? Sure. What about degrees? They give us better education and lead to more economic growth, which leads to higher wages. It doesnt make sense.

Chicks and De-oderant

Please don't wear as much deoderant, it gives me hay fever. Its good to smell nice but not from 15metres away.

Buses, Cars, and Cycling

I hate buses.
Why?
They are either late or early. When was the last time you saw a bus on time? The bus is early when the driver is about to take a break or finish the shift, they are late all the other times. And they are charging me $1.40 for the privilege to sit on a filthy diesel bus with all these slobs on it that is never on time! It doesnt take much imagination why public transport is loosing all this money.
If you want to get arses on seats on public transport run a decent damn business. It isnt that hard look at the Rockefeller's, Bill Gates, Ford etc for ideas, its obvious you have no idea on how to run a successful business. I'm sick of my hard earned tax dollars paying your wages when you do squat! How long have you had to fix Sydney trains? My point exactly.

This moves me onto cars or known more affectionaly to me as Cagers. YOU HAVE EYES USE THEM TO READ THE ROAD RULES. I know at times its hard to remember stuff and reread it to remember it, but when its as important as the road rules I think there is some incentive. Like you dont get a fine or kill yourself or even worse; me.
Another one:
YOU DONT OWN THE FUCKING ROAD. This one is pissing me off badly. Real bad. Cyclists have as much rights on the road as you do as long as we dont impede traffic. This doesnt mean we are not meant to be on the road. I know "common sense" aint so common but give a cyclist some room and look out for them. If you hit us we are spending the next six months in hospital. Group Rides are allowed its just tough luck that you are stuck behind one get over it, you wont be any more than ten minutes late to that all important hair dresser's appointment.
For your own knowledge cagers, bikes aren't as slow as you think I know its hard for you to understand that the human body can (at times) keep up with your engine, but don't get so pissed off when a cyclist passes you. Its all gravy, just relax.
The next time someone yells at me to get on, "the fucking sidewalk," I am either going to kick a few dings in your car or buy a u-lock and assault you. Since Im a uni student its more than likely it will be the first option.
I dont have anything against you cagers it just at times you get on my nerves, hopefully we can get on much better in the future.

Been so busy

Been busy lately so I havent really posted anything. Anyway not much has happened that I would consider interesting (outside of uni starting).
Anyway, I reckon textbooks are a rort. Think about you have to buy them, whats stopping them from charging an insane price?

Dvorak has predicted that Apple will switch to Windows, its a good read but like most people it's not going to happen.

New Helmet

Figured since my helmet will celebrate its 9th birthday this year its time for a new one.
So I bought a Specialized Air Force from Avanti in Newcastle. Its a very comfy helmet even though I dont have the fit perfect right now. At least I got service at Avanti unlike at Hadleys. I got the white one and immediately took the visor off.

Uni offers

I got into economics as expected. A fair few UAI cutoffs fell this year, economics dropped 8points, Biotech dropped 10, and this is after they are saying this is a record year for offers. I guess though most of the new offers were in teaching and nursing. The high demand courses like law kept high UAI cutoffs.
A lot of offers were made ot full-fee paying students, which kinda shits me. Is this an academic institution or a business transaction?

A few surprises though in what courses friends/people I know got into.
Congratulations!!!

At last, the last bit of stress is over and done with!

Mainround Uni offers released tonight

Mainround university offers are released tonight at 9pm on the UAC site

Goodluck to everyone and I hope you got into the course you wanted.

OSX 86 edition

This is more than likely illegal. But nobody reads this shit anyway. Here is a very good link on how to install OSX on your non apple hardware. A few notes though, it works best if your cpu is SSE3, you will need to patch the image file (of OSX) to make it work on SSE2. Forget it if your cpu doesnt have either instruction set. You can check if your cpu is either by running cpuz which can be found here

If someone attempts to do this, I hope it works for you. Because I want Jobs to release OSX as a standalone OS, where I dont have to buy Apple Hardware

Cycling

I got this messenger bag yesterday off a bloke that is heading back to Utah in a few weeks. I paid a very good price compared to what a new one would cost me. (I would probably need to order it from the States too.) Its in exceptional condition, it looks like it has never been used!

Messenger bags are really comfortable when cycling. Just watch these blokes/gals Go

All I need now is to convert my bike to a fixed gear and I'll be on my way.

Windows Live Messenger Beta (WLM)

Got an invite to this today. It's basically the next version of MSN messenger. Gates thought it was also a good time to change the name. I don't really know why he would do that, I guess to compete with Google and Yahoo.
WLM is has the same features as MSN 7.5 . It looks heaps better though. Google for some screenshots.
If you want an invite Go Here Or email me in the vain hope I'll have a few invites in the next couple of days.

Specialized Tyres

back tyre on the pushy blew out yesterday. I hate it how shoulders on the road are always have a heap of crap on them and the traffic forces you to ride in it. The worst stuff is broken bottles from drunks walking home.
Obviously I bought a new set of tyres today.
  • I got these specialized tri sport
  • and I'm happy with them. A lot more grip than the big W set (which caused a lot of flats and were a waste of money) can't wait until they are scrubbed so I can fly down from the Hill into Bar Beach.
They only cost $23 a tyre.

    Blockbuster is a rort

Cut up my blockbuster video card today because its a rip. Video Ezy is only in Mayfield anyway

    US army worried about blogs

The Pentagon is now officially worried about blogs soldiers are writing while serving in Iraq. To me this a joke, while reading some of these army blogs I could not find one that was dissident or was giving away sensitive information. While it is good to read what soldiers are experiencing/feeling while in Iraq for me most of these blogs was not detailed enough. I guess the US army still want to control all the media coming from Iraq. Probably because of the backlash the media caused during the Vietnam War.

    News article
  • here
  • Search for US army soldier blogs at
  • Blogger search
  • Aldi DVD player now $50

    I bought one a
  • Aldi DVD player (tevion dvd-5000)
  • yesterday. It works really really well, it plays all my mpeg4 files, (divx/xvid and apparently nero video and 3ivx), mp3s, and all my "burnt" dvds. An interesting feature is the ability to view photos off a memory card. (i really cant see myself using that too much).
The only problem I have had with it is using a DVD+RW where sometimes a mpeg4 will not load. It only occurs occasionally and reburning the disc seems to fix the problem.
It has a variety of outputs (scart, component, s-video, optical, digital), its good to see a cheap dvd player use high quality outputs. I use s-video because the set top box is using the scart connector.
If you want a way to make the player region free (coupled the player with a tv that does secam and ntsc) to watch dvds from around the world try this:

    "open the "very slim" tray
    press 2812
it appears an OSD and you can:
select the "Region code" 1-6 or 9 for zero
finally powerswitch off (on the backside)"

Dont blame me if this doesnt work because i haven't tried it. I recommend though that if you do change the region coding change it to the region that the dvd is from as some discs come with protection that won't play on region free players.

If you want one I would be pretty quick because they were selling fast and they seem to get little stock. I don't like Aldi but a dvd player this cheap and good needs a little plugging.

NSA spying on you even if you have nothing to do with USA

This is scary. Read about it in abbreviated form
  • Here
  • or extended form
  • Here

  • Basically George Bush is allowing illegal spying on own citizens conducted by the NSA, using phone taps, coercing phone companies to hand over records and monitoring internet traffic that travels through the country.

But what is even scarier: (quoted from The New York Times)

"(...) Several officials said that after President Bush's order authorizing the N.S.A. program, senior government officials arranged with officials of some of the nation's largest telecommunications companies to gain access to switches that act as gateways at the borders between the United States' communications networks and international networks. The identities of the corporations involved could not be determined.

The switches are some of the main arteries for moving voice and some Internet traffic into and out of the United States, and, with the globalization of the telecommunications industry in recent years, many international-to-international calls are also routed through such American switches.

One outside expert on communications privacy who previously worked at the N.S.A. said that to exploit its technological capabilities, the American government had in the last few years been quietly encouraging the telecommunications industry to increase the amount of international traffic that is routed through American-based switches."

This means you don't have to live in the USA or place a call to the USA without being spied on by the NSA. This is not normal eavesdropping as such, but analysis of who is calling who allows the NSA to find potential targets on the basis on their phone usage patterns. I would be afraid if I called the Middle East a lot.
They are even monitoring internet usage as well.

I guess one potential way around this problem is to switch to voip then use the tracert command to find out what countries/servers the call will travel through. Hopefully you will find a way to avoid the USA all together.

Is there anyway to maintain some privacy even in these days?

    Lawsuit Against Wikipedia

Apparently some people are trying to get a class action lawsuit happening against wikipedia.
  • their site is here
  • These people have no idea what wikipedia is about and how revolutionary it is. Wikipedia is a great place to go to general reading about a topic. It has helped me in Physics a lot.
  • Wikipedia
  • is a place of collective intelligience where individual peers can edit material. These stooges that want to close wikipedia down to protect there own interests and scams apparently. Since anyone can edit wikipedia these stooges believe since no one can take responsibility for posting or editing the website should be shut down. It's obvious these stooges have something to hide. You can read more about it
  • Here

  • If you want to take action I suggest you email these stooges at lawsuit@wikipediaclassaction.org Don't be too abusive though they'll probably add you to their list of people to sue.

    Really funny Rant

Read this at craig's list couldnt stop laughing for 10 minutes.
  • Funny Rant

  • Hope you find it as entertaining as I did

    iPod batteries are user replaceable

Contrary to what I have been reading and hearing lately ipod batteries are replaceble. You can buy batteries from shops that sell Apple gear. For people in Australia I recommend
  • Street Wise
  • as it is popular and well known.

These battery kits include a battery (obviously) the tools you need and a manual. Although it would be wise to google for guides on how to change the battery. Apparently it is a bit of a complicated task but if you take your time nothing will go wrong except maybe a few scratches on your ipod.

Most 3rd party batteries do come with a better battery charge. It will be a while before batteries appear for the latest generation of ipods.

The Apple warranty does include that if the ipod charge only holds 50% of its charge during the warranty period it will be replaced free of charge. So if you can go nuts and waste the battery so after one year you can get a new iPod. Obviously check the warranty before you do this.

My iPod still has its original battery and is maintaining good charge and now is one year and one month old.

    Riot in Cronulla

Saw this in the paper today http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200512/s1529041.htm
Its about white people causing a riot and bashing lebanese people. Apparently last night there were retialation attacks. Where will it end? I hate racism. But it seems our Prime Minister keeps taking us down this path. What is even more disturbing is how they attacked ambulance officers

I dint think it would make the internation news but here it is:
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=1396273
Charming pictures of our racial brethen isn't it.
